Historical context: The early Democratic-Republican Party (sometimes called the Jeffersonian Republican Party) is not the same organization as today's Republican Party. Some officials changed affiliation, served on coalition tickets, or served while the vice presidency was vacant. Grover Cleveland and Donald Trump are numbered twice because each served nonconsecutive presidential terms. Party descriptions summarize historical affiliations, which can be more complex than a single label.
